Rory Horner: New geographies of African trade and the role of the state in GVCs

Vortrag
Referent/in: Dr. Rory Horner, University of Manchester
Inhalt:

A new geography of 21st century trade has emerged for many countries in the global South, including within Africa, with a considerable expansion of South-South trade. This talk highlights some of these shifting patterns and asks what they mean for development strategies in the context of global value chains. Polycentric trade requires going beyond the “G” in GVCs, to also consider “R” and “D” – regional and domestic. It also presents new challenges for the various roles of the state, which must adapt to this polycentric trade context and may include, but must extend beyond, an often-found emphasis on facilitating participation in GVCs.

Dr. Rory Horner is currently a Lecturer in Globalisation and Political Economy, ESRC Future Research Leader and Hallsworth Research Fellow in the Global Development Institute. An economic geographer by training (PhD, Clark University), he has been based at Manchester since September 2013.
